Tragic I-20 Collision: Multiple Fatalities Reported Near Wills Point

A major multi-vehicle collision on Interstate 20 near Wills Point, Texas, has resulted in the tragic loss of five lives and caused significant traffic disruptions. The incident, which occurred on June 28, involved multiple vehicles, including several 18-wheelers, and led to a chain reaction of collisions.

Incident Overview

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), the accident occurred on the eastbound lanes of I-20. Traffic had reportedly slowed due to a previous crash when a 2025 Peterbilt 18-wheeler, allegedly driven by a 27-year-old from Kissimmee, Florida, collided with the rear of a 2018 Ford F-150 pickup truck. The impact set off a chain reaction, involving other 18-wheelers and passenger vehicles.

The vehicles involved in the initial collision included the Ford F-150, which was then pushed into another 18-wheeler from Monroe, Louisiana, which subsequently struck a 2005 Freightliner 18-wheeler. The Peterbilt 18-wheeler then jackknifed, sliding into the left eastbound lane and striking a 2021 Jeep Compass. The Jeep was then pushed into a 2013 Ford Mustang. Debris from the crash also struck a Honda Civic traveling in the left lane.

Victims and Injuries

The DPS has identified the five individuals who tragically lost their lives in the accident:

  •   Billy McKellar, 79, of Tyler
  •   Zabar McKellar, 52, of Fort Worth
  •   Krishaun McKellar, 45, of Fort Worth
  •   Kason McKellar, 16, of Fort Worth
  •   Nicole Gregory, 49, of Dallas

The McKellars were occupants of the Ford F-150 pickup and died at the scene. Nicole Gregory, who was driving the Jeep Compass, was airlifted to a hospital but pronounced deceased upon arrival.

One other occupant of the McKellar vehicle was transported by CareFlight to a local hospital with non-incapacitating injuries. The driver of the Ford Mustang sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene, while a passenger in the Mustang was hospitalized with non-incapacitating injuries. The two occupants of the Honda Civic were not injured.

Investigation and Legal Implications

Preliminary reports from the DPS indicate that the driver of the 2025 Peterbilt 18-wheeler allegedly fell asleep at the wheel, leading to the initial collision. The driver has been arrested and charged with multiple counts, including manslaughter and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

This devastating incident underscores the potential for catastrophic consequences when large commercial vehicles are involved in collisions. Accidents involving 18-wheelers often result in severe injuries and fatalities due to the size and weight of these vehicles. Determining liability in such cases can be complex and often requires a thorough investigation into various factors, including driver fatigue, adherence to safety regulations, and vehicle maintenance.

Factors Contributing to 18-Wheeler Accidents

Several factors can contribute to accidents involving large trucks, including:

  •   Driver Fatigue: Long hours and demanding schedules can lead to driver fatigue, increasing the risk of accidents.
  •   Negligence: Actions such as speeding, distracted driving, and failure to adhere to traffic laws can significantly raise the likelihood of collisions.
  •   Improper Maintenance: Inadequate maintenance of trucks, including brakes, tires, and other critical components, can lead to mechanical failures and accidents.
  •   Inadequate Training: Insufficient training for truck drivers can result in errors in judgment and unsafe driving practices.
  •   Overloaded or Unsecured Cargo: Overloading or improperly securing cargo can affect a truck’s stability and increase the risk of accidents.

Legal Rights and Recourse for Victims

In the aftermath of such a tragic event, it is important for victims and their families to understand their legal rights and options. Individuals injured in accidents caused by the negligence of others may be entitled to compensation for their damages. Similarly, families who have lost loved ones in fatal collisions may have grounds for a wrongful death claim.

Potential damages in personal injury and wrongful death cases can include:

  •   Medical Expenses: Compensation for past and future medical bills related to the injuries sustained.
  •   Lost Wages: Recovery of lost income due to the inability to work as a result of the accident.
  •   Pain and Suffering: Compensation for physical pain, emotional distress, and mental anguish.
  •   Property Damage: Reimbursement for damage to vehicles and other personal property.
  •   Funeral Expenses: In wrongful death cases, compensation for funeral and burial costs.
  •   Loss of Consortium: Compensation for the loss of companionship, support, and services in wrongful death cases.

Commentary from Gosuits Kaufman County, Texas Personal Injury Attorney

This tragic multi-vehicle accident on I-20 serves as a stark reminder of the importance of safe driving practices, particularly for commercial vehicle operators. The alleged actions of the 18-wheeler driver, falling asleep at the wheel, highlight the potential for devastating consequences when drivers fail to prioritize safety.

In cases involving commercial vehicle accidents, multiple parties may potentially be held liable, including the driver, trucking company, and even the vehicle manufacturer, depending on the circumstances. A thorough investigation is crucial to determine all contributing factors and responsible parties. Families who have lost loved ones and individuals who have sustained injuries in such accidents have the right to seek justice and compensation for their losses. Pursuing a personal injury claim or wrongful death lawsuit can help victims recover the financial resources necessary to cope with medical expenses, lost income, and other damages.
