All cars going south on I-35 had to go through Denton to get to the rest of the metroplex. Because of this, drivers in Denton spend an average of 39 hours stuck in traffic every year. A city’s traffic conditions are the result of a multitude of factors, some of which include individual driving patterns and the infrastructure of a city. One of the most crowded segments of roadway in the state of Texas is route 380, often known as University Drive in the city of Denton. Because it serves not just as a key east-west highway for the state but also for local traffic in Denton, it is often congested both during the week and on the weekends. People who are trying to circumvent the traffic on Interstate 35 by taking Denton’s State Highway 77 as a detour are making the already bad situation on State Highway 380 much worse. As a result, the traffic at the intersection of State Highways 380 and 77 is virtually always backed up.
Even though Denton is close to a lot of big cities, its accident rate has been about average for a city its size over the past five years, fluctuating between about 3,200 and 3,900 accidents per year. The Traffic Expert and the City Council member tried to explain that they were working on a plan to get rid of the traffic jams. In the meantime, they suggested that commuters use Interstate 35 instead of State Highway 380, which is known to be less busy.
