A tragic accident early Wednesday morning claimed the lives of a woman and her dog on Interstate 35E in Dallas, according to officials.
The incident occurred around 1 a.m. near Royal Lane, as reported by the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities stated that the woman was walking her dog along the highway when the animal ran into traffic. In an attempt to retrieve her pet, the woman followed, but both were struck by an oncoming vehicle.
Emergency responders arrived on the scene, but both the woman and her dog succumbed to their injuries. The driver of the vehicle involved remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators, according to officials.
Following the accident, all southbound lanes of I-35E were closed for several hours as law enforcement conducted their investigation. The roadway was reopened in time for the morning commute. The identity of the deceased woman has not yet been released pending notification of next of kin.
